Teach young writers how to plan topics for how to books. Here is a lesson plan tutorial on generating topics for how-to books for kindergarten, first or even second grade. Help students see that there are lots of things that they have background knowledge on and can use that as fuel for a how to book. It’s a great lesson idea to integrate into writer’s workshop time.
Brainstorming How To Books Topics
If you’re helping students in the planning step of the writing process, then it may be helpful to list out topics that could turn into “how to” books. Students can list things they know how to do, or things they know how to make or what they know how to be. This list can be modeled first by the teacher and then completed by students on the free printable download. Students can pick one to begin planning a new story and keep the list to help later on!
