Let’s teach across the curriculum with picture books. Teaching with picture books is a classroom passion of mine, and I find many other teachers share a similar passion.
Here is how you can use picture books as a read-aloud for a back-to-school activity with a craft.
This craftivity is based on A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle.
You might not think the book has much to do with back-to-school, but comparisons can be made between outgrowing the shell and outgrowing last year’s classroom.
Just like hermit crab decorates his new shell to make it feel like home, students use this free shell pattern to create a special name tag to help make their new desk space feel more like home.
They decorate their desk with an all-about-me desk name tag…

I am a former journalist who changed careers and became an elementary teacher. I have spent the last four years substituting. Many students know me as "the baby teacher" since I tend to do long-term jobs for teachers on maternity leave.
My quest is to land in a classroom of my own, but until then I plan to be the best sub I can be... and help others do the same.
