Teaching phonics and vowel patterns is helpful to budding readers. Students can explore word work and improve their recognition of vowel patterns by building a word, comparing two similarly spelled vowel patterns and by learning songs to help build their skills.
Each free download listed here should help you accomplish just that. This is just the tip of the iceberg too, since many first grade and second grade teachers incorporate these skills.
