Make the elements of art fun! Here is a quick and fruitful game to practice both the elements of art and the principles of design. Take students on a scavenger hunt around the classroom using a beach ball full of prompts to think of examples. This game can easily be created for any grade level by changing up the prompts on an inexpensive beach ball.
Beach Ball Elements of Art & Principles of Design Game
Keep this idea handy when you need to fill a few minutes or a whole class period – it’s a game they’ll love! Simply customize the questions you ask of your students to tailor the grade level. Add prompts or questions relating to line, shape, form, color, value, texture and space as well as balance, movement, rhythm, contrast, emphasis, pattern and unity on a beach ball with a Sharpie marker. Students play by rules to create a fun, but safe, atmosphere and read the prompt closes to their right thumb aloud. Using only words to answer – this game keeps everyone in play!
